About Chris
Chris teaches oil painting year-round. In addition to Hollis Artspace, he teaches at venues including the Concord Art Association, Truro Center for the Arts, North Country Studio Workshops, Ogunquit Summer School of Art, and more. He has led painting workshops on the Isles of Shoals and guided painting trips in the Scottish Highlands.
With graduate degrees in poetry, English, and philosophy from the University of New Hampshire and Stony Brook University, Chris taught college English, art history, mythology, and writing before becoming a professional artist. Drawing on that background, his paintings begin with mood and emotion, rooted in the traditions of Tonalism while extending toward abstraction through a contemporary sensibility.
Chris paints on site, en plein air, and from life, absorbing the atmosphere and visual vocabulary of a place that he later draws upon in the studio with greater freedom of expression.
Chris is represented regionally by several galleries and by Georges Bergès Gallery in New York City. In addition to teaching, he is an artist coach and mentor and writes about art for Art New England magazine and Inside Art from Streamline Publishing.
His honors include the 2017 St. Botolph Club Emerging Artist Award and the Nellie Taft Grant for Outstanding Painting.
